Salazar / Triay win the #WPTChileOpen . In the final, the Spanish women benefited from the withdrawal of the young Argentinian Claudia Jensen, who suffered heat stroke the day before and was therefore unable to finish her first final. Jensen & Jessica Castelló, number 19 & 21 in the WPT world rankings, played an outstanding tournament and were the big surprise in the final. They celebrated victories in the quarterfinals against Sánchez / Josemaría, among others, and played a thrilling semifinal over two hours against Sainz / Osoro, which they won 7/6; 7/6.
In the men's singles, Austin Tapia and Arturo Coello continued their flawless streak on the WPT Tour, winning the Chile Open against world number 1 Juan Lebrón and Ale Galán 6:4, 6:7, 7:5. In the men's final, a controversial scene occurred towards the end of the second set. With the score at 40/30 5:4 for Tapia/Coello, they won the point - and thus the match - and began to celebrate their victory. But the match was not over so quickly, because the previous match point was not a match point, but a break point. The referee called for a golden point on the grounds that the previous score was 30/40 (and not 40/30). Tapia/Coello were visibly confused by the situation and eventually lost the second set in a tiebreak.
The Centre Court of the Universidad Católica de Chile was festively decorated for the two finals on Sunday and there was a sensational atmosphere.
